iPhone 6s Review: This was the ‘S’ year for Apple, the year that does not see any design changes but it is more about the things under the hood. The tagline – ‘The only thing that’s changed is everything’ – though is an exaggeration. The changes that the iPhone 6s has got over the iPhone 6 are incremental, faster processor, the screen responds to the pressure, the camera seems a major bump finally and is now capable of shooting 4K videos, Live photos are the most significant ones. Oh Yes! it now comes in a new color too – the Rose Gold.

iPhone 6S Build and Design:

The ‘S’ phones see minimal changes in the design department  the same goes for the iPhone 6S too. If you place the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6S next to each other you will hardly be able to tell the difference (unless the 6S is in the Rose Gold color though). But when you take the new phone in hand and if had been using the iPhone 6 for a while you will easily be able to feel the increased thickness and weight that can be attributed to the newly incorporated 3D Touch technology and the 7000 series Aluminum used to make the device more sturdy and durable.

According to me the increased weight feels good, it makes the iPhone 6S feel substantial and not just a toy that can anytime slip out of your hands. The iPhone 6S is a joy to hold a such light and thin phone has never felt this premium. The sad part is that you will not want to use the iPhone 6s without a case on it as the smooth metal and the rounded sides still make the device very slippery.

The new iPhones also offer a new color other than the Silver, Space Grey, and Gold, which is the Rose Gold. There has been many debates about how pink does the Rose Gold look and whether if it is a girly affair. What I feel is that the colors have not yet been classified belonging to any particular gender, go check the colors first hand in the stores and go for the one that you like the most. My personal favorite being the Sapce Grey as it is the only one that offers an all black front.

iPhone 6S Display

Apple has gone with the same resolution display that they had used in the iPhone 6. The screen stays the same at 4.7 inches and having a resultion of 750×1334 pixels. This Retina Display being behind its Android counterparts on paper, the screen produces brilliant pictures and it is still one of the best screens that produces true to life pictures.

One of the most significant changes that have come in the iPhone 6S is to the screen too. Apple has added one more dimension to the screen of the iPhone 6S and you can now interact with your phone using the pressure of your finger. Apple calls these functions – peek and pop. You can either peek into the stuff or pop it open.

The 3-D Touch is a futuristic tech that has a lot of capabilities for the future but right now there are only a few apps that have integrated this feature in themselves. Once more number of apps start making use of this feature only then the real potential of the 3D Touch will be unveiled.

iPhone 6S User Interface

The iOS 9 that was revealed in June 2015 did now create much excitement back then as it looked pretty much like the iOS 8 but the real features of the iOS 9 became evident with the release of the iPhone 6S that is the support for 3D Touch.

The  iOS 9 visually looks exactly like its predecessor. The apps are on the home screen that can be grouped into folders and the dock below still can take up to four shortcuts. The Color Themes, System icons, and the Transparency all are the same as in the iOS 8.

The new iOS 9 also brings two new apps – Notes and News, and it has made the Maps better with the support for public transit support. Siri has got smarter and responds to your voice, the Mail and Messages are refreshed and few more tweaks for the good here and there.

iPhone 6S Performance

Apple has packed the iPhone 6s with new A9 processor and paired that with M9 motion co-processor for an improved efficiency. Apple has finally ditched the 1 GB RAM and has now opted for 2 GB RAM in the iPhone 6S. During the launch of the new iPhones, Apple had said that the new processor is 70 times faster than the previous ones and it delivers 90 times improved graphics performance and this can be felt in the real world usage too. The iPhone 6S runs blazing fast though the difference is little. All this with the efficient memory space usage of the iPhone, it promises a very fast, lag free usage.

The Touch ID fingerprint sensor that lies in the Home button below the screen has also become very fast and accurate and you will not ever be complaining.

iPhone 6S Camera

Finally after the long wait, Apple has got the camera resolution upgrade in the iPhone 6S. After four years of sticking with the 8MP, Apple has finally bumped up the resolution to 12MP in the primary camera and the front camera now boasts of a 5MP sensor. Both the camera have the same aperture of F/2.2.

The difference between the 12 MP and the 8 MP of the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6 and very difficult to find but the main improvement in the camera department comes for the front camera. The pictures taken by the front camera of the iPhone 6S are away better than the ones taken from the Paltry 1.2 MP shooter on the iPhone 6. Apple has also included a thing called Retina Flash in the iPhone 6S that acts like a flash while clicking selfies in the dark. In this, the screen of the iPhone 6S brightens up to act as flash.

The iPhone 6S also provides you the option of clicking Live Photos and shooting videos in 4K.

iPhone 6S Battery

Once again, the battery of the iPhone is its biggest weakness (leave out the Plus versions from the discussion). The iPhone 6S is packed with just 1715 mAh of non-removable Li-Po battery and this is 5% smaller compared to the one in iPhone 6. In the iOS 9 Apple has introduced a Low-Power mode. But no matter what, just 1715 mAh battery for the price you pay for the iPhone 6S does not manage to justify.

iPhone 6S Storage

Hello Apple, if you are listening, please know that most of us users feel that the 16 GB base model for the in 2015, with the improved camera,  4K videos, Live Photos is utter stupidity.

Apple has once again chosen to go with the 16GB model which cost a whooping Rs. 62,000. This way Apple is compelling its users to pay an extra Rs. 10,000 to get the 64GB storage variant.

If you can to use the 16GB variant you will have to forget the 4K videos and back up, actually transfer the data to cloud or to your laptop at regular intervals.

iPhone 6S PROS and CONS

What I Liked:

  • Brilliant and Premium look and feel
  • 3D Touch
  • Nice camera improvements
  • Blazing Fast performance
  • Retina flash
  • 2GB RAM

What I Disliked

  • 16GB Base Model
  • Small Battery
  • No wireless charging
  • No Turbo Charge
  • NFC limited to Apple Pay

iPhone 6S My Verdict:
The iPhone 6S is a brilliant smartphone and you will  not be disappointed in any ways (just don’t get the 16GB variant) getting this amazing device. It you have an iPhone older than the iPhone 6 or you plan to move to the iOS ecosystem from Android or Windows then this is the perfect device for you. The prices in India though are freak but let’s just keep that out for the time being. This is in a way the biggest bump in the iPhones coming to the ‘S’.
