Build and Design:

‘2015’ has been a year of significant design changes for Samsung and the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 follows on the footsteps of the Samsung Galaxy S6.

The Samsung Note Series has finally bid adieu to the tacky faux-leather, and it now adorns a beautiful glass and metal body. The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 sports a Gorilla Glass front and back and the sides are of metal. The Note 5 is clearly the most beautiful looking Note.

The design of the Note 5 looks totally premium and the curved backs perfectly fits in your palm.

The S-Pen has also gone through some changes, for the good that is. This time it does not has a cut out on the back of the phone from where you used to slide out the stylus in the Note 4, instead, the S-Pen in the Galaxy Note 5 features a clicky end, which when pushed will release the stylus from the device.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 features the same fingerprint sensor we had seen on the Samsung Galaxy S6. The fingerprint scanner has improved a lot from how it was in the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the accuracy rate has improved a lot too. The accuracy rate though not 100% but it makes for a pleasant experience.

Display

Samsung has somehow mastered that art of making brilliant displays in its flagship devices; the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is no exception. The screen size and the resolution of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 stay the same at 5.7 inches like its predecessor Note 4 but Samsung has clearly improved the saturation and brightness.

The colors produced on the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 screen are not exactly natural but they are a treat to look at. You will not be disappointed even when using your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 under direct sunlight. The 518ppi screen produces the best output on the screen and is brilliant.

User Interface:

The TouchWiz, Samsung’s UI that we love to hate, this time around the Touch Wiz has se3en some welcome changes and it now looks more refined and toned down. Samsung has eliminated a lot of the bloatware that used to come pre-installed on the device. Nevertheless, there are still a few present on the device.

However, TouchWiz has turned less irritating now.

Performance:

Samsung has used the same Samsung Exynos 7420 CPU in the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 as they have used in the Samsung Galaxy S6. It is an octa-core processor with four power cores of 2.1GHz Cortex-A57.

Samsung has done a brilliant job with the processor. It is fast, efficient and it does not get hot like the Snapdragon 810 processor.

Samsung has used smaller and more efficient transistors in the Exynos. The processor clocks 2.1 GHz without giving out any significant amount of heat.

Camera

We were totally in love with the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung has used the same camera in the Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

They have kept the rear camera at 16 MP sensors with an aperture of f/1.9 lens covering it. It also provides Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and all these features together click some of the best quality pictures. Samsung has also made their camera fast and the auto focus provides nice quality pictures.

Samsung has boosted the front camera on the Note 5’s and it now provides 5 MP sensor compared to the 3.9 MP one we saw on the Note 4.

You can also now capture 4K Ultra HD pictures with the Note 5.

Battery

On papers, you would be disappointed to see that the Note 5 features a less powerful 3000 mAh battery compared to the 3200 mAh battery on the Note 4. However, in the real world usage we find that the Note 5 runs longer than the Note 4. The battery is non-removable; this might be a turn off for many.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 provides the option of two standards of wireless charging.

Storage:

Samsung has finally done away with the expandable memory option and the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is available in two storage variants – 32 GB and 64 GB.

What I Like:

  • No tack Faux-Leather, beautiful design
  • A brilliant display
  • The camera is very impressive
  • The S Pen is more usable now and works great
  • Fast Performance

What I Dislike:

  • Speaker does not produce nice quality sound
  • Battery is good but at the price it could have been better
  • Tends to be slippery

My Bottom Line

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is a brilliant Smartphone and a worthy successor to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. It has a brilliant screen, fast and great photo-taking camera and a new and beautiful design and build. It is clearly among the best smartphones of 2015, the best phablet of 2015 and a treat to use. Despite of its large size, the Galaxy Note 5 does not feel odd to use at all.
